About this book
Looking back on a visit to Ballantrae, Launcelot Kennedy remembers a family funeral overtaken by armed unrest. The tower of Ardstinchar burns while he and his father search for a route home. Their loyalties lie with Cassillis, but the town supports Bargany, making even a walk by the river dangerous. Launcelot questions the hostility between the two sides, and his father's impatient replies reveal how firmly allegiance governs their lives.
S. R. Crockett gives this historical novel a personal voice, combining the young narrator's observations with the local speech of those around him. Nell's teasing tests Launcelot's confidence as friendship moves towards courtship. Sir Thomas Kennedy, meanwhile, asks him to read from the Gospels. For readers interested in historical adventure, these quieter exchanges place affection, humour and religious reflection alongside the struggle between rival families.
