About this book
Charles Duke Yonge wrote The Life of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. The preface says the principal authorities for the work are the four volumes of Correspondence and the six volumes. The preface adds that a regular series of letters from the imperial embassador at Paris, the Count Mercy d'Argenteau, may almost be said to form a complete history of the court of France.
The text records that by the beginning of July, 1769, all the preliminaries were arranged and the French newspapers were authorized to allude to the marriage. A writer quoted in the text says, "if people could only believe that these are my real thoughts, perhaps they would love me a little," and the text calls such language and sentiments worthy of a sovereign.
