About this book
Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards is the author of Joan of Arc. The text says that it was in the great forest of Le Mans that the curse of the Valois, long foreshadowed, if men had had eyes to see, came upon the unhappy king. A chamberlain named William de Martel was able to come up behind and throw his arms round the panting body. The Dukes of Berry and Burgundy say they must go back to Le Mans, and that here is an end of the trip to Brittany.
Dunois, who held that there was no hope of victory this day, says the Maid came to him and asked him to wait yet a little while. In Dunois's account the Maid mounted her horse and went alone into the vineyard, some way from the throng of men, and abode in prayer there for about a quarter of an hour. The Maid was summoned to hear the result, but she lay ill in her prison, worn out with fasting and misery, and Cauchon himself came to visit her.
