About this book

With her bicycle awaiting a repaired tyre, Hildegarde Grahame walks home from the village reading letters. A child's uncertain spelling, news of an elderly neighbour's new cottage, and a friend's account of a successful play bring her circle of acquaintances into view. Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards builds this story for young readers around friendship, family ties and the small acts that make people feel remembered.

Christmas preparations give that kindness a practical shape. Hildegarde and her friends sort gifts, admire a hat she has trimmed, and examine a silk blouse made from one of her mother's old garments. Their conversation turns domestic skills and familiar possessions into expressions of care. The fifth volume in the Hildegarde series offers readers an intimate look at a young woman's household, with affectionate teasing, lively letters and close attention to how presents are chosen and made.
