About this book
Laura Tayne looks back on a childhood of comfort at Tayne Abbey in Kent, shadowed by a family sorrow she has kept secret. Her first memories dwell on her affectionate mother, the mansion's picture gallery, and gardens cultivated by generations of Taynes. Charlotte M. Brame gives this domestic novel a daughter's perspective, setting the warmth of those early scenes against the fear that enters Laura's later recollections.
By fifteen, Laura watches the household closely while her mother is ill and uses a wheeled chair. Miss Reinhart's attention to Sir Roland Tayne troubles her, particularly the suggestion that his wife's illness has made him deserving of pity. Laura also reads ambition in Miss Reinhart's admiration for the estate. The interest lies in these uneasy observations: a young daughter's loyalty, the influence of flattering conversation, and the fragility of a once happy family home.
