About this book

The voices of Angus carry homesickness, affection and village humour through Violet Jacob's Scots verse. This collection brings together two small volumes of poetry rooted in the speech and landscape of eastern Scotland. In the opening poems, a young man's thoughts turn to Jean during church, while a worker in London remembers the fields and friendships of the Howe of the Mearns. Another speaker watches the road that has drawn three sons away from home.

Rain, harvest fields, woods and migrating birds give these feelings a physical setting. The collection moves from the noisy piping and dancing of Hogmanay to memories of Craigo Woods and an exile's conversation with the north wind in "The Wild Geese". A glossary explains Scots words. Readers interested in regional language and poems of separation will find both intimate voices and sharply observed rural scenes.
