About this book

Old family pride and divided loyalties shape Walter Scott's historical novel of England in the age of Charles II. Its opening traces the Peverils' Derbyshire ancestry before introducing Sir Geoffrey, a country gentleman devoted to the royal cause. Civil war brings his household into danger, while his neighbour Major Bridgenorth supports Parliament. Their political differences coexist with personal obligations: Lady Peveril shelters Bridgenorth's family, and he later helps preserve her husband's life and property.

A later scene brings these tensions into the room where Julian Peveril watches Alice Bridgenorth and a stranger whose disguise troubles him. Armed servants gather for worship, and a biblical reading becomes a forceful statement of religious allegiance. Affection, suspicion and inherited loyalties meet in conversations and domestic scenes. Readers interested in historical fiction can follow how public conflict enters family relationships, with Scott's attention to the manners, beliefs and social distinctions of the period.
