About this book

Mary Jane's City Home is by Clara Ingram Judson, illustrated by Thelma Gooch and dedicated to her mother and father. Its contents list fifteen chapters, among them Finding the New Home, Sand Castles, The Bus Ride, The Birthday Luncheon, A Trip to the Zoo, School Begins and Christmas in Chicago.

Mary Jane sees street cars running on tracks high in the air and asks her father, whom she calls Dadah, whether they can ride the train on stilts. Mr. Merrill says not today, and the family takes a taxi along the Midway, a long green parkway, to a hotel beside the park. Mrs. Merrill tells Mary Jane and Alice they may sit on the porch and watch the children play there. At a birthday luncheon there is cake topped with ice cream and a pink candle, and everyone makes a wish. Elsewhere Mary Jane learns to skate on an ice pond with her father's help.
