About this book
Mary Wollstonecraft is a biography by Elizabeth Robins Pennell. The preface says comparatively little has been written about the life of Mary Wollstonecraft, and names Godwin and Mr. C. Kegan Paul as the two authorities upon the subject.
A father carries his family to Barking in Essex, a place of Mary’s principal childish recollections, where she cares nothing for dolls and the ordinary amusements of girls. The biography gives an account in which a woman asks Mrs. Fuseli to admit her into her house as a member of the family, and Mrs. Fuseli grows righteously wrathful and forbids her ever to cross her threshold again. Godwin asserts, in referring to the months of their married life, that theirs was not an idle happiness, a paradise of selfish and transitory pleasures, and the biography says Mary never let her work come to a standstill.
