About this book

Behind a barred window, Maria struggles to collect her thoughts while worrying about the infant daughter taken from her care. Her husband has placed her in confinement, and her wish to regain freedom is inseparable from her concern for her child. Mary Wollstonecraft uses this opening to connect private distress with the laws and customs that leave women subject to other people's decisions.

Published in 1798, this unfinished British novel also looks back at the family habits that shape those unequal arrangements. Maria recalls nursing her mother through illness while a favoured brother receives money and avoids responsibility. Affection, disappointment and financial dependence sit beside reflections on the different burdens borne by sons and daughters. The author's prefatory notes explain her interest in women across social classes, giving readers a direct account of the questions behind the story.
