About this book

Masters of the Wheat-Lands by Harold Bindloss lists chapters called Sally Creighton, Sally Takes Charge and Wyllard Assents, among others, and was published in England under the title Hawtrey's Deputy. A character named Hawtrey agrees with Sally, saying "That’s very much what’s the matter with me."

The text describes Sally as "less than half-taught" and unacquainted with anything beyond the simple, strenuous life of the prairie. Hawtrey has promised to pitch bags into a granary, and with Sally's assistance he hoists the first of them onto his shoulders. On the Selache, Dampier comes aft to Wyllard, who is standing at the wheel, and tells him "You can’t get through that." A man waits while the schooner strains at her cable, and at last "a faint splash of oars came out of the darkness."
