About this book

Snow blows around Jim Dearham's telegraph shack in British Columbia while he reads an old French romance and watches the line. A former McGill student with little money, Jim has tried mining and other work before taking this isolated post. When two English climbers arrive seeking shelter, their conversation turns from old French literature to Langrigg Hall in England.

Harold Bindloss builds this adventure novel around the contrast between bush work and landed property. The later scenes find Jim considering how to manage Langrigg, with plans to enlarge fields and drain a marsh. Mordaunt and Dick warn him that local customs and sporting interests make reform difficult. Family connections add another source of pressure. The book offers readers an account of practical ambition meeting inherited privilege, with the details of a winter shack and an English estate giving that conflict a concrete setting.
