About this book
Memoir of Old Elizabeth, A Coloured Woman is credited to Old Elizabeth. The opening note says the narrative was taken mainly from her own lips in her 97th year, with her simple language adhered to as strictly as was consistent with perspicuity and propriety. The narrator says of being born in Maryland in the year 1766 to parents who were slaves.
The narrator says that in the eleventh year of age a master sent the narrator to another farm, several miles from parents, brothers, and sisters, which was a great trouble. The narrator says the narrator's mother told the narrator of having nobody in the wide world to look to but God. The narrator says Michigan held a wide field of labour amongst the narrator's own colour, and that a school for coloured orphans was established.
