About this book
The title page of A Slave Girl's Story reads Being an Autobiography of Kate Drumgoold, Brooklyn, New York, 1898. The first chapter says that, once a slave girl, the writer has endeavored to fill the pages with some of the most interesting thoughts that the writer's mind is so full of, and not with something that is dry. The chapter says the sketch is written for the good of those that have written and prayed that the slaves might be a freed people, and have schools and books and learn to read and write for themselves.
The writer says she saw a form coming that looked like her dear mother's, and called to her sister Frances to come at once and see. The writer says the mother had made up her mind that she would take her children to a part of this land where she thought that they would never be in bondage any more on this earth. The writer says the sister Frances was hired out, and that they did not see her from one Christmas to the other.
