About this book
Memoirs of a Cavalier by Daniel Defoe is also titled A Military Journal of the Wars in Germany, and the Wars in England, from the Year 1632 to the Year 1648. The introduction says Daniel Defoe is, perhaps, best known as the author of Robinson Crusoe. The introduction calls Defoe a vigorous pamphleteer, writing first on the Whig side and later for the Tories in the reigns of William III and Anne.
A speaker called my father tells his son that if the son's own choice does not agree with his, he will be his adviser but will never impose upon him. The gentry of Yorkshire went home again, giving the king good promises, but never appeared for him till, by raising a good army in Shropshire and Wales, he marched towards London. The Parliament calls for an account of the Scots' demands, which the Scots give in, amounting to a million, but, according to their custom, the Scots fall down to £500,000, and at last to £400,000.
