About this book
The contents of The Conquered list chapters by season and year, beginning with Autumn, 58 B.C. A note on the title page says that one coin shown there is a gold stater of Vercingetorix. Naomi Mitchison dedicates the book to her brother, J. B. S. Haldane.
In one passage someone tells a tale of the princess Esa of the Blue Mantle while Kormiac thinks of building another ship if war comes with the Romans, his brother the Druid thinks of becoming Chief Druid of all Gaul, and Gandoc the Briton thinks of his coming bride and his trade in tin and iron. Fiommar listens. In another passage Meromic, feeling the shame of his slavery, bends over Molhir, who asks him to make a song about him, one for men to sing when Gaul is free.
