About this book

The Children of the New Forest opens with a narrator saying that the circumstances took place in the year 1647, when King Charles the First had been defeated and was confined as a prisoner at Hampton Court. The opening passage says the Cavaliers, or the party who fought for King Charles, had all been dispersed.

Jacob goes in search of the children, finds them playing in the garden, and tells Mr Edward that they must leave the house immediately and go to his cottage that night, because the Parliamentary troopers will burn it down. Benjamin and a man whose name appeared to be Will are followed by Edward, who has heard enough to satisfy him that they were bent upon a burglary. Clara tells Humphrey that Patience says his sisters have gone away from the cottage, and asks who is to look after the cows and goats and poultry.
