About this book
Memoirs of the Comtesse Du Barry gives minute details of her entire career as favorite of Louis XV, by Baron Etienne Leon Lamothe-Langon. A servant announces M. Lebel, premier de sa Majesté, with M. Morand, and the comte presents Lebel to the narrator formally. Lebel replies that she is worthy of a throne, and adds that she is the most lovely creature he ever met, though no one is more in the habit of seeing handsome females than himself.
Lebel remained mute and motionless from admiration, and the direction of the Parc aux Cerfs is said to have given him much influence with the king. A pie sent by M. de Maupeou turns out to hold an immense swarm of cockchafers, and Zamor, who had never before seen these insects, pursues them all over the room. Comte Jean, who chanced to be present, says to take it, since the only way of punishing a miscreant is to break his purse-strings.
