Memories recalls a childhood visit to Gordon Castle with the narrator's father and sister Ida, described as the narrator's first recollection of country-house visiting. The account of a journey describes two days of storms that kept everyone below deck and sent water into the cabin, followed by a welcome in London on the fifth day.
The narrator remembers a first ball given by Sir Adam Hay of King's Meadows, with his four daughters surrounded by flowers and light. The account of a cave visit complains that visitors cut names and initials so deeply and conspicuously that the fainter carvings became difficult to trace.
