About this book
Arnold Bennett's Mental Efficiency, and Other Hints to Men and Women opens its contents with a section on mental efficiency, divided into "The Appeal," "The Replies," "The Cure" and "Mental Calisthenics," followed by a section called "Expressing One's Individuality." One passage speaks of a vague regret felt by cultivated people who see great stores of knowledge they will never make their own, such as being unable to point out the Pleiades though they have read how many stars it holds.
He notes that these people work only six or seven of the twenty-four hours in a day, and says it needs only an impulse, an effort and a system to cure the mind of its slackness. Another passage concerns marriage and describes a man and a woman at a sale, in a lively argument perhaps about initials on pillowcases. In another he says he does not permit himself to be dogmatic about the persistence of personality after death.
