About this book
Methods of Destroying Rats by David E. Lantz is Farmers' Bulletin 297 of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, issued May 31, 1907. The letter of transmittal says the damage done by these rodents, both in cities and in the country, is enormous, and the calls for practical methods of destroying them are numerous and urgent.
The contents list names Poisoning, Trapping, Use of ferrets and dogs, Fumigation, Rat-proof construction and Natural enemies of rats, among others. The introduction says the brown or Norway rat is the worst mammal pest in the United States, with losses from its depredations amounting to many millions of dollars yearly. The text says trapping, if persistently followed, is one of the most effective methods of destroying rats. The conclusions say that by the persistent use of traps, occasional resort to poison and forethought in the construction of farm buildings so as to minimize the opportunities for harborage, farmers and others may prevent the greater part of the loss.
