About this book
At twelve, Michael Penguyne is already learning a fisherman's work on the Cornish coast. While the boats return towards the cliffs near the Lizard, Paul Trefusis watches him splice a rope and begins to explain Michael's family history. The man he calls father was his own father's friend and shipmate. Their promise to care for each other's families gives the story its starting point, alongside Paul's lessons in kindness, duty and Christian faith.
William Henry Giles Kingston's novel for young readers places those lessons among fishing nets, gathering storms and the dangers of a rocky shore. A later rescue leaves Michael worrying about a damaged boat and how he will provide for Nelly and granny, while the Tremayne family offers practical help.
