About this book

A spring departure from Bristol in the early sixteenth century soon turns into a struggle with Atlantic storms. Aboard the Water Wagtail, naturalist Paul Burns hopes to gather knowledge, while young Oliver Trench eagerly follows the friend he admires. Oliver's father commands the ship, but damaged equipment, repeated gales and a restless crew make his task increasingly difficult. Big Swinton begins urging the sailors to change their destination to Newfoundland.

R. M. Ballantyne's adventure for younger readers brings together seafaring trouble, exploration and Christian ideas about conduct. Later, Paul, Oliver and their companions wake at a forest camp to an unexpected fall of snow. The hunter Hendrick explains how the changing season could affect their plans. Humorous exchanges between father and son sit beside practical worries about weather and supplies, giving readers a story of friendship and decisions under pressure.
