About this book

Estelle May Hurll's Michelangelo is a collection of fifteen pictures and a portrait of the master, with introduction and interpretation. The preface says that in making a collection of prints from the works of Michelangelo, it is impossible to secure any wide variety, either in subject or method of treatment. The preface says it is dealing with a master whose import is always serious.

A discussion of the frescoes mentions Adam rising to his feet in obedience to the Creator's summons, and Christ the Judge sweeping asunder the multitudes. A statue is called in Italian Cristo Risorto, that is, Christ Risen or Triumphant, and it is connected with a story told by St. Ambrose about the apostle Peter. The text says St. Peter, it is believed, spent the latter part of his life in Rome, where the cruel emperor Nero was doing his best to exterminate the Christians.
