About this book

Midwifery and the Diseases of Women is a Descriptive and Practical Work by Joel Shew, M. D., author of various works on hydropathy. The title page says the work shows the superiority of water-treatment in menstruation and its disorders, among them chlorosis and hysteria, and in pregnancy and its diseases and the general management of childbirth, nursing, etc. The title page adds that the work is illustrated with numerous Cases of Treatment.

A quoted case says that it was extremely difficult to get the child to swallow nourishment the first week and that, under this careful management, the child attained the age of four months, at which time his health and excretory functions were peculiarly regular. The text says Dr. Guy has arranged a table showing the lengths and weights of children reported to be born during the fifth and sixth months of gestation. The writer says, as to difficulties at the child's navel, that the writer has never had them, and that a water-dressing, often renewed, and kept thoroughly clean, heals the navel more quickly than can be done in any other known way.
