About this book
Medieval doctors, surgeons and teachers take the foreground in James J. Walsh's history of medicine. Published in 1911, the book examines medical learning from the fall of the Roman Empire to the discovery of America. Its chapters consider Jewish and Arabian physicians, the medical school at Salerno, women physicians, dentistry and the beginnings of laboratory methods. Walsh argues that earlier practitioners often anticipated ideas that later generations regarded as new.
The surgical material gives that argument concrete detail. Discussions of head injuries show the attention earlier writers paid to symptoms, pressure on the brain and care during operations. Built from material prepared for lectures and articles, the volume connects accounts of individual physicians with the institutions that taught their skills.
