Mighty Mikko

Mighty Mikko: A Book of Finnish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales is a 1922 collection by Parker Fillmore (1878-1944), the American folklorist-reteller whose versions of European folk tales were standards of the children’s shelves between the wars. The book gathers Finnish wonder tales, animal fables, and droll stories, with the title tale of Mikko the fox who makes his poor master’s fortune, in the clear storytelling prose Fillmore had developed in his earlier Czechoslovak collections. Fillmore worked from translated sources, shaping the tales for American children while keeping their national character.
