About this book

Mistress and Maid is a household story by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik. A rather tall, awkward girl of about fifteen, called the maid, enters the kitchen of her mistresses, the Misses Leaf, accompanied by her mother, a widow and washer-woman named Mrs. Hand. Elizabeth notices a queer machine of thin rope and bits of wood hung from the ceiling hooks, an old-fashioned baby's swing.

Johanna says she sees but one thing, to get him home, and Hilary says she will never agree to it. To Elizabeth, Little Henry is a perfect revelation of beauty and infantile fascination, and he fills up every corner of her heart.
