About this book

An empty drawing room sets the English village of Stowel talking. The Miss Traceys have moved into a new house, and their neighbours turn a glimpse behind a closed door into a possible announcement of a party. Watching these small dramas from his sofa, the narrator records visits, borrowed authority and the elaborate politeness through which everyone tries to satisfy a lively curiosity.

S. Macnaughtan's comic diary novel follows this social world through conversations with the narrator's sister Palestrina and encounters with families whose hopes centre on engagements, invitations and appearances. A later gathering leaves Palestrina disappointed by the gap between exciting scenes in books and the cautious conversation of actual guests. The appeal lies in the precise observation of everyday manners: an unsolicited house tour or a proud father's imitation of his child can reveal as much as a formal confession.
