About this book

The Half-Brothers is by Elizabeth Gaskell. A narrator says that their mother was twice married and never spoke of her first husband. The narrator's mother is left a young widow of twenty, with a little child only just able to walk.

The little girl takes ill of scarlet fever only a fortnight before Gregory is born, and in a week she lies dead. The schoolmaster grew weary of scolding and flogging and advised the narrator's father to take one pupil away and set him to some farm-work that might not be above his comprehension. The text says Gregory had risen up, and whistled Lassie out with him.
