About this book

A Russian princess escaping a harsh sentence finds her passage aboard a whaling vessel carrying her farther from home. Vera Zarovitch presents her account as a record of discoveries in the Earth's interior, where Mizora offers an imagined model of life transformed by science. Her political troubles and separation from her family give a personal frame to the novel's interest in customs, government and human progress.

Within Mizora, Vera turns her attention to daily life and the natural world. Vera describes brilliant northern lights, abundant orchards and winter streets where everyone has warm clothing and a welcoming home. Instruments carry familiar voices across thousands of miles, while a lecturer's moving image can appear before distant audiences. These concrete inventions make Mary E. Bradley Lane's speculative fiction useful for readers interested in how earlier writers imagined communications technology and the everyday comforts of an ideal society.
