About this book

A strange letter asks a writer to expect a midnight visitor in a white shroud. When the figure appears and delivers a message, the writer answers Carson Napier, who soon arrives to explain his unusual abilities and scientific plans. Napier describes an upbringing in India with Chand Kabi, a teacher who trained him in telepathy and the projection of mental images. This opening gives the account of space travel a personal frame, built from correspondence, conversation, and an apparently impossible encounter.

Later, Napier watches Venus draw his craft toward its orbit after an attempt to reach Mars goes wrong. His calculations, oxygen equipment, and parachutes become urgent matters as dark clouds approach and gravity changes the interior of his vessel. The novel brings imagined technology close to the practical business of staying alive.
