About this book
A newspaper report of a strange light on Mars sends an inquisitive narrator to Professor Gazen's observatory. Their conversation tests the possibility of signals from another planet against the astronomer's doubts about distance, atmosphere and life beyond Earth. Published in 1897, John Munro's novel gives these arguments a place beside telescopes, electric lights and the excitement of looking into space.
On Venus, the narrator and Gazen travel through a warm landscape of brilliant birds, flowering groves, lakes and hot springs. A distant city and a palace above a lake prompt close inspection through their glasses, as wonder competes with the possibility of a mirage. The book combines planetary adventure with extended descriptions and discussions of science.
