About this book
Professor Hoffmann's Modern Magic is subtitled A Practical Treatise on the Art of Conjuring. This American edition has 318 illustrations and an appendix explaining some of the best known specialties of Messrs. Maskelyne and Cooke.
In one passage a borrowed coin seems to leave a handkerchief while the performer keeps it. The Demon Handkerchief, called Le Mouchoir du Diable, is made of two handkerchiefs of the same pattern stitched together with a slit in one, so that a coin, card, egg or watch can be passed into the space between them. Another passage describes a light table whose centre pillar can carry a cord, and mechanical pieces set in motion by vertical rods ending in a pedal, with numbered figures for the drawings. A further passage covers a torn card restored with a retained corner, and mechanical changing cards.
