About this book
Modern Saints and Seers is by Jean Finot, and its opening page names Evan Marrett as translator. A preface titled The Forest of Illusions says that the phenomenon of religion, which was believed to have receded into the background of human life, is reappearing, more vigorous than ever. A chapter called The Negativists says that the most propitious and fertile soil in which collective mania can grow is that of unhappiness.
The Negativists denied everything, among them God, the Devil, heaven, hell, the law, and the power of the Tsar. A record of proceedings against one of the principal upholders of the sect gives a conversation with the judge in which the answers are that he has no religion and believes in no God. A passage about the shores of the Great Salt Lake says that the colony became more flourishing than ever as the number of its adherents increased. The text says that Hermes Trismegistus, the Thrice-Greatest One, further developed these principles, adding to them the mystical treasures of Egyptian wisdom.
