About this book
The Phantom World by Augustin Calmet is a work on the history and philosophy of spirits and apparitions, translated from the French, with a preface and notes by the Rev. Henry Christmas. This edition, printed in Philadelphia in 1850, brings two volumes in one. The title page carries a Latin line from Pliny's Natural History, and the work is dedicated to Henry James Slack.
Chapter I is titled The Appearance of Good Angels Proved by the Books of the Old Testament. It points to the cherub with a flaming sword at the entrance of Paradise, the angels who appeared to Abraham and to Lot, the one who spoke to Hagar in the desert, and the one who spoke to Moses from the burning bush on Horeb. In another passage the author lists natural wonders, among them a phosphorus whose writing shines in the dark and small worms in rotten wood that give a bright light by night. A further passage turns to magic and witches.
