About this book

A fourteen-year-old boy arrives at Wapping Old Stairs with a new sea chest and a head full of pirate stories. In the opening tale of W. W. Jacobs's More cargoes, Ralph boards the Susan Jane, whose skipper has agreed to pretend that his schooner is a pirate ship. The crew's teasing soon tests the boy's grand ideas about life at sea, while his encounters with a porter and a waterman show how quickly confidence can meet a demand for money.

This collection of English humorous short stories turns shipboard authority, pride and everyday bargaining into comic disputes. Another passage brings Mr. Hutchins into a schooner's cabin, where his campaign against drink wins over the skipper and infuriates the mate. Loud hymn singing gives the crew a chance to needle their superior. The dialogue, practical jokes and clashes between officers and sailors offer readers a lively picture of seafaring manners and social friction.

About the author

W. W. Jacobs

W. W. Jacobs (William Wymark Jacobs, 1863 to 1943) was an English writer born in London, the son of a wharf manager. He drew on that dockside world for comic stories of sailors and night watchmen, though he is best remembered for the chilling tale "The Monkey's Paw."
