About this book

Loading cement leaves nearly every part of the schooner Seamew dusty, including the crew's dinner. From this grubby beginning, W. W. Jacobs turns to shipboard gossip about Captain Wilson, whose smart clothes and trips ashore have caught his men's attention. The mate tries to enforce discipline while quietly sharing their curiosity, and the sharp-tongued young sailor Henry supplies information on his own terms. The opening places everyday work, rank and personal affairs in continual comic collision.

This volume contains two chaptered tales, The Skipper's Wooing and The Brown Man's Servant. Henry's quick tongue also serves him ashore: inside a school summer-house with a girl called Gertrude, he shares apples and invents accounts of battles with pirates. Readers who enjoy nautical fiction and verbal comedy will find humor in the gap between the crew's claims to authority and the boy's ready answers.

W. W. Jacobs

W. W. Jacobs (William Wymark Jacobs, 1863 to 1943) was an English writer born in London, the son of a wharf manager. He drew on that dockside world for comic stories of sailors and night watchmen, though he is best remembered for the chilling tale "The Monkey's Paw."
