About this book
A cock choking on a bean sets his mistress off on a chain of errands, from a cow to haymakers, an oven, woodcutters and a smith. This opening tale establishes the repeating requests and talking creatures of Valerian Viliamovich Karrik's collection of ten Russian folk stories. Elsewhere, a goat and a ram meet wolves beside a cooking fire, and a hungry wolf discovers that finding dinner is harder than announcing his intentions.
The short tales move between cottages, fields and forests, using direct speech, repeated phrases and sudden tricks to keep the action clear. Their animal comedy sits alongside harsher fairy tale episodes: King Frost brings dangerous cold, while an injured bear approaches a village singing about his loss. Readers interested in children's folklore will find a compact collection whose familiar farmyard creatures can be clever, fearful or threatening.
