About this book
Mother of Pearl is by Anatole France, in a translation by Frederic Chapman. A speaker addressed as Pontius Pilate tells Lamia that the priests of their nation appeared before his tribunal imploring him with supercilious humility to have the ensigns removed from within the holy city.
The speaker swears before the immortal gods that never once during his term of office did he flout justice and the laws. The speaker moans and lapses into silence, and Lamia replies that the man is prudent who neither hopes nor fears anything from the uncertain events of the future. At intervals a man murmurs tender supplications at a grating, asking for the water of innocence, a white robe, and wings for his poor soul, and begs aloud for confession.
