About this book
The contents list a prologue, The Prussians on the Rhine, and chapters titled “The Citizeness Teutch” and “The Marriage Proposal”, among others such as The Night Before the Battle. Chapter IV, headed Eugene de Beauharnais, shows a lad of fifteen, with black eyes and curly black hair which fell over his shoulders, in whom everything betrayed the aristocrat in spite of the efforts that had evidently been made to disguise it.
Charles examines the preparations for one of the most appetizing breakfasts that had ever been placed before him. A young officer of great merit and noble birth arrives at Martinique and becomes acquainted with her at her Aunt Renaudin’s house, and the Vicomte de Beauharnais and Josephine love each other with all the ardor of two young people. A sergeant-major says he can get some for five sous, though they cost the government forty, and Roland goes up to Bonaparte and tells him what the sergeant-major had just said.
