About this book
Clio is by Anatole France, in an English translation by Winifred Stephens. The contents list names, among others, The Bard of Kyme, Komm of the Atrebates, Farinata degli Uberti, The King Drinks, and The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. The note by the editors says The Château de Vaux le Vicomte is a translation of the text of a sumptuously illustrated volume.
A character called the Aged One tunes his lyre and begins to teach a song to the children, who are seated on the ground around him with crossed legs. The Aged One sings the lines over and over until the little singers know every word, and bids the children honour kings and heroes, who are superior to other men. The text says that Foucquet's genius was too lucid and his views too far-reaching to permit him to hesitate for a moment, and that he remained attached to Mazarin's fortunes when the Minister's downfall seemed permanent.
