About this book
Mountain Blood is a novel by Joseph Hergesheimer. A chapter has the fiery disk of the sun just lifting above the shoulder of hills that held the city of Stenton when the Greenstream stage rolled briskly from its depot, a dingy frame tavern. Gordon Makimmon eats largely and rapidly, ably seconded by the strange passenger and Buckley Simmons, while the priest, Merlier, eats sparingly, in an absent, perfunctory manner.
A man beside Gordon groans and drops upon his knees and a woman cries, God! God! God!, as the tumult swells, directed, dominated, by the voice of the revivalist. A man walks through the house to the sitting room and stands lost in thought, reflecting that the County was mad clear through and that Sim, supposing him guilty, had warned him to escape, advised him to run away.
