About this book
The Bright Shawl is by Joseph Hergesheimer. Once Howard Gage has gone, his mother's brother sits with his head bowed in frowning thought. Charles Abbott is taken south not by actual sickness but by the delicacy of his lungs, following scarlet fever, and a secondary consideration determined him on Havana.
According to the account, it was brought out that there was a growing and potent, but secretive, spirit of rebellion against the Government, to which Seville was retaliating with the utmost open violence. Charles Abbott instinctively draws back into the box; every natural feeling impels him to go blindly to the support of Andrés, and he thinks there must be some way, a quick shifting of masks and escape through a side door, to get him safely out of the hands of Spain.
