About this book

A fork in a woodland path opens this collection of poems, placing an ordinary decision beside the story a person may later tell about it. Robert Frost moves from that brief encounter to country households, winter darkness, trees and work on the land. In "Christmas Trees," a visitor offers to buy the firs on a hillside, and the speaker weighs their market price against the value they hold at home.

Short lyrics share the collection with longer poems shaped by conversation. A couple settling into a country house talk about the years ahead, while a village woman recalls the small garden she planted as a girl. These scenes give readers concrete ways to consider memory, choice, aging and the meanings people attach to familiar places. The shifts between spoken exchanges and close observation make the collection rewarding to read aloud.
