About this book

Regional pride and the business of selling it give the opening poem its dry humor. A speaker recalls encounters with travellers who advertise their states, a poet with a cause to promote, and an old friend whose wealth came from trade. Against these conversations, New Hampshire becomes a place of farms, minerals, local figures and curious individuals, each considered with a mixture of affection and teasing skepticism. The verse moves through anecdotes and direct speech, giving large claims about a place the scale of ordinary talk.

Elsewhere, a girl's memory of clinging to a birch tree while gathering grapes turns into a reflection on what hands, mind and heart can release. Another poem brings personal feeling into a discussion of burial arrangements between Eliza and Laban. These shifts from practical details to emotional questions offer readers poetry attentive to how people explain themselves and hold on to what matters.
