About this book

River reeds, woodland sounds and the first light of morning give Henry David Thoreau a language for inward experience. In this collection of nineteenth-century American verse, the opening poem asks for a modest place close to nature, picturing a breeze moving through reeds rather than a position of worldly power. Elsewhere, winter sunlight entering a forest becomes an image of renewed peace within the mind. Pine trees, birds and clouds carry thoughts about perception as well as descriptions of the outdoors.

The poems also turn toward friendship, grief and the sustaining memory of ancient Greece. A speaker listens for a lost companion beside a brook, while a tolling church bell sets human sorrow against the blue sky. These changes of mood make the collection useful for readers interested in how short, rhymed poems connect close observation with private reflection.
