About this book
Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique presents a selection of instruments with an introduction, descriptive notes, and a series of coloured illustrations. The discussion of instruments classed generally as Harmonicons describes wooden or metal bars and says these instruments are especially at home in Java, Siam, and Burma.
The account of the Zulu Marimba describes gourd resonators attached to the bars as the simplest form of sound reinforcers. The Chitarrone belonging to Mr. George Donaldson is richly inlaid with mother of pearl. The instrument description gives an overall length of 6 feet, a neck measuring 4 feet 1 inch, and a Venetian origin and date of 1608.
