About this book
A successful autumn hunt turns uneasy when Spotted Deer hears a loon call that seems to come from an unseen watcher. Paddling home toward the Delaware village, the young hunter studies the riverbanks, weighs the danger of unfamiliar canoes and tries to read the signals passing through the woods. Elmer Russell Gregor builds this adventure around the small sounds and shifting shadows that can change a traveler's sense of safety.
Elsewhere in the story, Running Fox and his companions examine tracks and an abandoned canoe as they try to learn what has happened to their friend. Their discussion sets competing explanations beside one another, giving the search a practical puzzle to solve. Written for young readers, the novel offers forest travel, tracking and the pressures of making decisions with incomplete evidence, with friendship giving urgency to the search.
