Sonny Holman rides into a town called Helada on a morning when, the story says, he is worth a thousand dollars to anybody there, though nobody seems to know it. A crowd is watching a black and white horse fight its rider. The horse's official name is Gunpowder, a man named Buck limps out of the corral after riding it, and Sonny says he would like to try riding it himself.

In another scene Sonny sits in the sheriff's office at night, writing with a pencil gripped in his fist, while music drifts from the Jackrabbit honkytonk. A short teaser says he takes on a dangerous duty for the sheriff in payment for a fiery horse, and that a long search lies ahead of him. In a further passage the sheriff makes Buck a deputy to look after prisoners and hands Sonny an envelope. The dialogue is written in strong frontier speech.

Murray Leinster was the pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins (1896-1975), an American novelist, screenwriter and inventor who wrote mainly science fiction. He wrote short stories and articles in very large numbers and won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1956. His books include "Space Platform" and "Talents, Incorporated".
